Though classical music performances in Thunder Bay date back to 1903 and the Port Arthur Philharmonic Society, the Lakehead Symphony (as we were once called) was not officially formed until March of 1960. Charrier and Dahlgren secured rehearsal space above a well-known billiard hall ( Hansen’s) in Port Arthur and Laskin gave a new piano to the orchestra. On November 29, 1960, the orchestra played their first performance in the Lakeview High School Auditorium. At the time, the 41 members were all amateur city musicians. The only member who was a musician by trade was violin teacher John Norhaugen.
Through the years, the TBSO has experienced many good times along with the usual growing pains. No matter how tough things got, many stalwart members of the community have remained positive and supportive. There is a commitment to keep the TBSO strong and of superior quality so that it will continue to thrive for many years to come.
There have been many conductors over the years, including C.H. Bateman (1964-67), a graduate of the Royal Marine School of Musicians in England; Boris Brott (1967-72) who came from the Northern Sinfonia; Symphony violinist Manuel Suarez (1972-74); Dwight Bennett (1974-89) who was spirited away from his doctoral studies at Indiana State University; Glenn Mossop (1989-95) who came to us from a career in Sweden; Stéphane Laforest (1995-1999) who came to us from the province of Québec; David Bowser, from Toronto, who was staff conductor during a season of guest conductors; and most recently Geoffrey Moull who returned to Canada to be Music Director the TBSO in 2000 after 24 years experience conducting in Germany. Over the years each conductor has left his mark on the organization, instituting such progressive programs as the Youth Orchestra, the first Symphony School of Music, the TBS Chorus and the Musicians in the Classroom project.
